🦴 The Dig Two Hours From Bend Just Rewrote American Prehistory

For decades the textbook said humans reached North America about 13,000 years ago. University of Oregon archaeologists just dated tooth enamel and stone tools at the Rimrock Draw rock shelter near Riley — two hours east of Bend — to about 18,000 years ago, sealed under a 15,000-year-old layer of volcanic ash. That's 5,000 years before the old story allows.

The evidence is in our backyard — and the dates line up with tribal oral histories of the Missoula floods and giant beasts.

First Tracks

Mornin', Bend. Showers and 45° today — patio season's on pause. Frost tonight (28°), but tomorrow's sunny and 53°. No snow on the ground yet, the Deschutes is running at 503 cfs, and heads up: the Cabin Butte area and parts of the West Bend trails are closed. Oh, and today's your last chance to drive to the top of Pilot Butte this year.

• 🏔️ Last call: the Pilot Butte summit road closes to cars tonight.

• 🎶 Tonight: Shovels & Rope at Volcanic, darkwave at Domino Room, and 8 more shows this week.

• 💖 A Central Oregon broker just gave $10K to search and rescue.

Around the Bend

🏔️ Last Call at the Top

Today's the last day this year to drive to the top of Pilot Butte. The summit road is open 10am to dusk, then the gate closes to cars until spring. Foot and bike access stays open year-round — but the lazy sunset drive? That's a today thing.

If you've said ‘we should drive up there sometime’ all summer — sometime is today.

💖 Ten Grand for the People Who Find Us

A Central Oregon broker donated $10,000 to the local search and rescue team, honoring a late colleague. The office said the loss hit hard, and they wanted the gift to mean something.

These are the volunteers who show up when someone's lost in the Cascades. Good to know who's got their back.

🍺 Last Call at Boneyard Pub

Today is the final day for Boneyard's Division St. pub — it closes October 11. Founder Tony Lawrence says they're going back to where it all started: the Lake Place taproom and brewery. Gift cards work at the pub through today, then at Lake Place through the end of the year.

One last RPM in the room that built the legend. The beer isn't going anywhere — just the address.

Did You Know

The water on Central Oregon farms took a 3-day, 120-mile trip to get there

Jefferson County used to be grazing range. Then the North Unit Irrigation District plumbed it — authorized in 1937, slowed by WWII, water flowing by 1946 — turning it into 50,000 acres of irrigated farmland. Wickiup Reservoir releases water that runs 60 miles down the Deschutes to Bend, then another 30 by canal across the Crooked River. Over 120 miles total, nearly three days in transit, all downhill by gravity.

The green fields you drive past on Highway 97 don't water themselves.

Why Bend

DogTown USA

Dog Fancy magazine named Bend "DogTown USA" — the nation's dog-friendliest city — back in 2012, and the town has spent the years since making sure the title stuck: 9 off-leash areas, dog-friendly patios everywhere, and an 18.8-acre off-leash park at Pine Nursery. LawnStarter still ranked Bend a top-10 U.S. dog city in 2025.
