🌉 Last call for Columbia Park: the park and the Gilchrist Bridge close Monday until next summer

Columbia Park — 'Pirate Ship Park' to local kids — and the Gilchrist pedestrian bridge close Monday, Oct. 19 at 8 a.m. and stay closed through early summer 2027. The whole park closes while the worn riverbank gets restored with a new access point, and the 1995 wooden bridge comes out, replaced by a wider, ADA-compliant span.

This weekend, Oct. 17–18, is your last chance to use them until next summer. After Monday, detours run via Galveston Avenue and the Bend Whitewater Park footbridge.

First Tracks

Mornin', Bend. Thursday is the pick of the week: sunny and 73° today, 77° Friday, not a drop of rain anywhere in it. The passes are clear, and the Cabin Butte and West Bend trail closures are still in effect. If you wake up smelling smoke, that's Wednesday's prescribed burn near Wanoga Butte settling overnight — the planned kind, story below.

• 🌉 Columbia Park and the Gilchrist Bridge close Monday at 8 a.m. until early summer 2027. This weekend is your last shot.

• 🐕 The Humane Society will now hand you a shelter dog for the day. Yes, really.

• 🎶 Tonight: Babes In Canyon bring indie synth-pop to the Domino Room.

Around the Bend

🏠 Cascade Landing opens today — 98 new affordable apartments, and you can walk through them

Bend's newest affordable housing community throws its doors open this afternoon, 2:30–4 p.m., at Atwood Drive and Ponderosa Street, with a ribbon cutting at 3 and self-guided tours. The 98 apartments landed ahead of schedule: 20 are reserved for households at 30% of area median income, the rest at 60%. A second phase adds 96 more homes in 2027.

Affordable homes at this scale don't open in Bend every day. If you're renting — or love someone who is — this afternoon's tour is the easiest first look you'll get.

🔥 Wake up to smoke this morning? It's the good kind — a prescribed burn near Wanoga Butte

Deschutes National Forest firefighters are running a prescribed burn on the Bend-Fort Rock Ranger District near Wanoga Butte — six miles northwest of Sunriver, 16 miles southwest of Bend. Ignitions began Wednesday on the Junction 6 unit, up to 332 acres, and may continue today if conditions stay favorable. Smoke is visible from Cascade Lakes Highway, Sunriver and Bend, and there are no road or trail closures.

If the air smells like a campfire this morning, that's why. Folks along the Deschutes River corridor — La Pine, Sunriver, Bend — are advised to keep doors and windows closed, with smoke impacts most likely overnight and early morning. This is the fuels-reduction work that keeps the bad fires away from homes.

🚀 Startup week takes over downtown: the Bend Venture Conference runs today and tomorrow

The Pacific Northwest's largest angel conference fills the Tower Theatre today and tomorrow, capping High Desert Innovation Week. Three Bend companies — Osheru, Closeoutdoor and EYEONIZE — are finalists, pitching for funding rounds that have historically run $100k to $2.5M.

Hundreds of investors downtown, two days running, with Bend founders on the main stage. Local pride with receipts.

🏛️ The three city managers walk into a room — this morning at COCC

City Club of Central Oregon's “Beyond City Limits” forum puts the Bend, Redmond and Sisters city managers on one panel this morning, 8–9:30 a.m., in Wille Hall on COCC's Bend campus. Growth, housing and traffic are the agenda — the stuff all three towns share now whether they like it or not. Tickets run $15–35, and registration is free with code CivicCO if cost is a barrier.

Ninety minutes with the people who actually run the region's cities, comparing notes in public. If Bend's growth arguments are your dinner-table sport, this is the room.

🧸 The Children's Museum just got a new name — and a new home in Bend's Central District

The Children's Museum of Central Oregon announced two big milestones on its way to opening Central Oregon's first children's museum: a new name, and a new home in Bend's Central District.

If you've got kids or grandkids, this is the one you've been waiting on. The Central District keeps stacking up reasons to cross the river.

🐕 You can now borrow a shelter dog for the day

The Humane Society of Central Oregon's newest volunteer program lets you take a shelter dog out for several hours — to the nearest food cart, the trails, wherever your afternoon was already headed. The dog gets a break from the kennel; you get the best excuse for a long lunch in Bend history.

Low commitment, high joy, and the dogs who get out most are the ones who get adopted. Sign up before your weekend fills up.

🍄 Saturday is a three-festival day: mushrooms, classic cars, and art at Caldera

Central Oregon hosts a trio of festivals this Saturday, Oct. 17, celebrating mushrooms, classic cars, and art and nature — including canoeing and crafts out at Caldera, the 119-acre arts campus. Pick one, or get ambitious and try for the triple.

This is peak fall Saturday in Bend. Whatever your thing is, somebody built a festival around it this weekend.

🗳️ There's a new ballot drop box at COCC's Bend campus

Deschutes County has added a ballot drop box at COCC's Bend campus, just as ballots for the Nov. 3 election head out. One more official drop spot on the west side, no postage, no mail timing math.

After yesterday's slow-mail warning, a drop box is the stress-free play. Students and westside voters just got a closer one.

🎸 Matchbox Twenty's 30th anniversary tour is stopping in Bend

Matchbox Twenty just announced their 30th Anniversary Tour — a 52-date North American run celebrating three decades of the band — and Bend is on the list. The Live Nation-promoted tour was announced this week.

Another big-room singalong summer night on the books for Bend. Watch the Source link for the date and ticket details as they post.

🎃 Otis the giant pumpkin is back at Expressway Market — guess his seeds, win a prize

Otis the giant pumpkin has returned to the Expressway Market on Reed Market Road at 15th Street in Bend, and the annual tradition holds: prizes for whoever comes closest to guessing how many seeds are inside him.

Free to guess, impossible to resist on the way in for milk. Take the kids, take a number, take your shot.

The Dirt

🏗️ Caldera Ranch keeps moving: 716 homes planned for southeast Bend

The Caldera Ranch development in southeast Bend continues to move forward despite community opposition. The plan builds 716 homes — one of the bigger additions to that side of town in years.

If you live, drive, or trail-run in southeast Bend, this changes your map over the next few years: more neighbors, more cars, more pressure on the roads out there.

🚧 Southeast Bend developers will now pay a new fee for road upgrades

Developers building in southeast Bend will pay a new fee for local road upgrades, collected through system development charges (SDCs). Growth paying for the pavement it wears out, in other words.

Southeast Bend roads are already the complaint at every neighborhood meeting. This is the mechanism meant to keep the upgrades ahead of the rooftops — Caldera Ranch included.

Pour Decisions

🥪 Sandwich Week is coming — bring extra napkins

The Bend Source's foodie guide to Sandwich Week is out: a full week built around the humble sandwich, which their Bend Foodie calls a heavyweight go-to. 'A week worth getting your hands dirty — and yes, extra napkins are a prerequisite.'

Lunch plans for next week, sorted. Work your way down the guide and argue about the ranking like a local.

💃 Cork & Barrel's Masquerade Ball goes full disco Friday night

Cork & Barrel's fourth annual Masquerade Ball lands Friday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Hanai Center — a sophisticated night out, 70s style: disco hits, cocktails, and small bites behind the mask.

Costume season starts early and classy this year. Friday night, sorted — if your platform shoes still fit.

Did You Know

💡 Peppermint was a Central Oregon cash crop — until a fungus wiped it out

Peppermint was introduced to Central Oregon in 1955 and became a major crop through the 1960s and '70s. Then verticillium wilt — a soil fungus peppermint can't adapt to because the plant only reproduces as clones — plus cheaper competition from India and China nearly erased it from the region. In a desperate 1970s experiment, scientists blasted 100,000 peppermint plants with radiation hoping to breed a resistant strain; the survivors became commercial varieties including Todd's Mitcham.

Surprising, specific, and very Bend: radiation-mutated mint and a crop-killing fungus.

Trail Mix

Thursday morning: sunny and 73° today, 77° Friday, and the passes clear. Smoke from Wednesday's prescribed burn may have settled low overnight — if it smells smoky early, that's the planned burn, and it should lift as the day warms. Cabin Butte and West Bend trail closures are still in effect — route your dirt time around them. Otherwise, it's a lunch-outside kind of day. Take it.

Why Bend

The honest version of 'geographically safe' — The real pitch: no hurricanes, no tornadoes, no tsunami zone, no sea-level rise — and Central Oregon is genuinely the state's Cascadia "safe haven," with far lower damage risk than the coast or Portland thanks to shallow basalt bedrock and distance from the fault. The honest footnotes: you'll still feel the Big One when it comes, tiny quakes happen here all the time (67 in 2024, none you'd notice), and wildfire smoke is the actual annual hazard.
